THE MEANING OF THE WORD

Author : Roslyn Ross

I use the word Spiritual a lot.

I define myself as seeking to live a spiritual life.

Spiritual is the word which most seems to reflect my eclectic set of beliefs and philosophy of life.

It's a word which expresses the sacred without being religious. By that I mean a life where I have a lot of time for God and little or no time for religion.

Religion can of course be spiritual but often it is not. And spirituality can be religious but it does not need to be.

For me reacting to life from a spiritual perspective means that I see everything, and I mean everything, as having purpose and meaning as part of my spiritual growth. Nothing happens by chance and good can come out of everything. It is of course far more complex than that. And yet, at the same time, incredibly simple.

Having explored many religions in my life I finally decided to stick with God and stay away from religion. Hence I began to use the word spiritual a lot. So what do I mean? I have started to ask myself that question. (more...)

Movie Review - SPUD
SPUD

Reviewer : Christina Bruce

SPUD (Troye Sivan) is a boy from an ordinary background who wins a scholarship to a private school in Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa. Initiated into the CRAZY 8 and surrounded by boys with nicknames like Gecko, Rambo, Rain Man and Mad Dog, Spud has his hands full trying to adapt to his new home.

Armed with only his wits and his diary, Spud takes us from illegal night swimming and schoolboy pranks to the red-hot furnace of the rugby field and cricket pitch. He also invites us into the mind of a boy struggling to come to terms with a strange new world, a boy whose eyes are being opened to love, friendship and complete insanity.

Book Review - Even Silence Has an End: My Six Years of Captivity in the Colombian Jungle
Even Silence Has an End: My Six Years of Captivity in the Colombian Jungle

Author : Ingrid Betancourt
Publisher : Penguin Press HC, The; First Edition edition (September 21, 2010)
Reviewer : Contributing Reviewer

This is a huge book both literally (at 594 pages) and emotionally in its message regarding humanity, as throughout her story she constantly defines (both negative and positive) what it means to be human.  From the very first page this book is totally engaging and emotionally challenging. It begins with the trauma, despair and hopelessness of Bettencourt failing in one of her numerous attempts to escape her imprisonment as a hostage of the FARC (a brutal terrorist guerrilla organisation).

The beauty of the Colombian jungle is juxtaposed against the physical hardships of living in a very dangerous and consequently (and more often than not) an extremely physically painful environment.    With the Colombian Army sending out search and rescue teams the guerrillas were constantly moving camps and forcibly marching the often starving hostages through the jungle.
