Building materials company James Hardie Industries believes the amount likely to be claimed by asbestos-related victims is less than previously thought.

A report prepared for the company by accounting firm KPMG said the amount to be paid in compensation at March 31 was likely to be $1.355 billion, compared to a previous estimate of $1.554 billion in September 2006.

The valuation of asbestos-related disease liabilities of former James Hardie Entities to be met by the Asbestos Injuries Compensation Fund trust is the amount that is anticipated to be claimed by suffers of mesothelioma and asbestosis caused by James Hardie asbestos products, which were scrapped in the mid 1980s.
