From the beginning of civilisation, people have worn clothing for one of two reasons, or both; appearance and protection.

Since early societies lived mainly in the warmer parts of the globe, clothing was worn mainly for decorative purposes.  As time progressed and populations spread, clothing also became a cover for the body.  People wore clothing for protection against the elements and also for reasons of modesty.

The earliest of clothing was made from the skins of animal conquests.  The art of sewing was developed in the Ice Ages and with the development of this new art of the sewing of fabrics came the growth of fashion.

Egyptian dress is the earliest known western fashion and the Greeks had a style of clothing that remained essentially unchanged for centuries. 

In the twenty-first century, clothing and fashion changes at least annually, to feed the clothing and fashion industry which is now a key employer of Australians of all ages and offers great rewards for creative Australians, young and not so young.  With children no longer expected to follow the clothing tends of their parents, the clothing and fashion industry is now heavily segmented to take advantage of the wide range of tastes and fancies that exist in our modern society.
