GARDEN & PLANTS
Our ancient ancestors initially had no gardens. They wandered around from place to place and ate wild fruits and roots and, occasionally, meat obtained either from a successful hunt or as a result of animal death. We can only guess what the first garden might have looked like. Possibly somebody noticed that melons had grown from discarded seeds and that a melon patch could be cultivated. By building a crude barrier or fence to protect the precious melons from the trampling of wild animals, the first garden was created. However the garden was invented, gardening is one of the world's oldest arts. We have gardening scenes pictured in the ancient tombs of Egypt and we know that for thousands of years before Christ, men in the valley of the Nile raised grain, fruit and vegetables. The Hanging Gardens of Baylon are famous as one of the ancient Seven Wonders of the World. Today, all kinds of gardens, and gardeners, can be found. Formal gardens on vast expanses of land and informal, "postage stamp" gardens on just a few square metres of soil are just two examples of what we regard today as being prefectly acceptable "gardens". And of course, "gardens" need "plants". Thuis page presents a few short articles on the way modern gardens are created using plants that can be readily bought from your nearby store. Hopefully, the articles will encourage you to find out more about gardening, one of the "world's oldest arts". |
