Liquid crystal display (LCD) is, as indicated by its name, a television using LCD technology (generally TFT), as opposed to cathode ray or plasma for its visual output.

Using state-of-the-art digital technology, the new system is extremely flexible, allowing the transmission of perfect pictures in a number of display formats, including high definition and standard definition television, in both conventional and widescreen versions. The accompanying audio is CD-quality with up to six channels (digital 5.1) of surround sound.

Digital television (DTV) uses digital modulation and compression to broadcast video, audio and data signals to television sets.

High definition television (HDTV) means broadcast of television signals with a higher resolution than traditional formats (NTSC, SECAM, PAL) allow. HDTV is broadcast digitally, and therefore its introduction sometimes coincides with the introduction of digital television (DTV).

1280:720p and 1920:1080i are typically accepted as high-definition scan rates.
