A ring tone (ringtone) is the sound made by a mobile phone to indicate an incoming message, whether a voice call or an SMS (text) message.  The early types of ringtones were very simple "beeping" or "ringing" noises, but in more recent times, the creation of original and innovative ringtones has become an industry in its own right, similar in many respects to the popular ("pop") music industry.

Newer mobile phones allow the users to associate different ringtones for different types of calls and even with different phonebook entries.  Phone users can now create their own music tones in formats such as the Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) or the more universal MP3 format.  These custom ringtones  are usually created using software on a computer or a musical synthesizer and are subsequently downloaded to the mobile phone or personal digital assistant (PDA) before they can be used.
