The Great Ocean Road follows Victoria’s south-west coast from Torquay to Warrnambool. Sites include the famous Twelve Apostles, Bells Beach and the Otways rainforest, and you can stop over in Warrnambool, Port Fairy or Portland.

The Stuart Highway stretches between Adelaide and Darwin via Alice Springs, measuring a massive 2,834 km. It’s an epic drive through the outback, passing the Devil’s Marbles and Coober Pedy, but mostly consists of empty, arid Australian landscape.

Savannah Way links Cairns on the North Queensland coast to Broome on the northern coast of Western Australia, passing through the Northern Territory and Katherine on the way. The 3700km of highway passes the Northern Territory’s Kakadu National Park and Lake Argyle, and finishes at Broome’s famous white beaches.

Bruce Highway

The Bruce Highway runs from Brisbane to Cairns on the North Queensland coast, passing through Rockhampton, Mackay and Townsville on the way. Starting in Queensland’s capital, the highway takes you north past the sunshine coast until you reach the tropical far north with the Daintree rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef just a hop, skip and jump away.

Pacific Highway

The Pacific Highway links Brisbane and Sydney, following the coast between the two cities. The Highway passes Gosford, Newcastle and Coffs Harbour in New South Wales and Queensland’s Gold Coast. It is a great way to take in New South Wales’ northern beaches before heading on to Queensland.

Tasman Highway

The Tasman Highway connects Tasmania’s two largest cities, Hobart and Launceston, via a route along the east and north-eastern coasts of the state. The east coast is known to have Tasmania’s finest and warmest weather and fishing towns such as Bicheno and St Helens are great places to break your journey.

Eyre Highway

The Eyre Highway stretches across the Nullabor, linking Port Augusta in South Australia with Norseman in Western Australia. The deserted and almost entirely treeless Nullarbor Plains are a world away from the coastal cities. Once you arrive in Norseman, you can extend your trip north to Perth or south to the coastal towns of Esperance and Albany.

Tanami Track

The Tanami Track connects Alice Springs with the Kimberley region, ending in Halls Creek, via a gravel road. It is a deserted drive and anybody attempting it is advised to make sure they have plenty of water and petrol. The track passes close by the Wolfe Creek meteorite crater.

Alpine Way

The Alpine Way begins in Jindabyne on the eastern side of the Great Dividing Range, and finishes in the Murray Valley. The Apline Way passes through Thredbo, only six and a half kilometres from the peak of Australia’s highest mountain, Mt Kosciusko. While the route is fairly short, it offers spectacular views and tourist destinations along the drive.

Victoria’s Midland Highway links the towns of Geelong and Mansfield. The highway covers a large arc and travels via the famous historical towns of Ballarat, Bendigo and Shepparton. The route passes through many of Victoria’s most famous tourist areas and includes several historically significant locations.
